Ladder to a Door
I wanted to make a large drawing without ever knowing what the entire drawing looked like. I built a moveable contraption -- a sort of ladder with doors at the back -- that could slide along a wall, always covering the wall with a tar paper screen. I positioned the contraption at randomly chosen points on the wall and, opening only one door at a time, reached through to draw on the wall in pencil. Over the course of this month-long installation, I covered the wall with drawings of places from my past as well as related abstractions.
